So what is curiosity, in actual neural terms?
Forget the cartoon lightbulb above the head. Curiosity is a distributed network event. Three key players:
• Prefrontal Cortex (PFC)
The executive suite. Planning, decision-making, juggling alternatives. This is where you hold multiple possibilities in mind and choose between them.
• Anterior Cingulate Cortex (ACC)
The conflict monitor. It lights up when something doesn’t fit: a prediction error, a contradiction, a weird result. Think of it as your brain’s “Uh-oh… wait” signal.
• Hippocampus
The context and memory librarian. It knows what’s familiar, what’s new, and where things belong.
Curiosity kicks in when this trio starts a particular dance:
1. The hippocampus spots novelty: “We haven’t seen this before.”
2. The ACC flags mismatch: “This doesn’t fit our current model.”
3. The PFC asks for a decision: “Investigate, ignore, or defend?”

That decision is everything. If you defend, you fall deeper into the Intelligence Trap. If you investigate, you’re in curiosity territory.
Curiosity isn’t magic. It’s a routing choice. It’s a neural habit that, with repetition, can be developed.

The PFC decides whether it wants to explore and learn or stick with the status quo in terms of how we see and interpret the world around us. The hippocampus has recognised a pattern or context but the ACC has recognised that there is a conflict in the data and the PCC can decide to open up to learning something new or reinforce current beliefs and perspectives – one path is to growth and the other to solidifying current view – asking questions and seeking to learn is the path to growth
Your PFC basically has to make one call:
“Do I protect my ego… or press the ‘this might make me look dumb but let’s find out’ button?”
Curiosity wins when the PFC allows a little uncertainty in, overrides the comfort reflex, and says:
“Yeah alright, let’s poke it and see what happens. Just be prepared to run if the shit hits the fan.”
The initial decision the PFC should make is to engage with a particular piece of information. At the same time this will require the PFC to decide to ignore the warning coming from the ACC. Curiosity thinking can then be activated by a decision to explore the target information. Further decisions will then be needed, in order to select appropriate questions to sustain the curiosity thinking process.
I guess it’s the risk assessor? Stay safe follow the herd go in to the unknown
The PFC decides, ultimately, if one will get out of their comfort zone to peripherally explore solutions to a problem, which might be a rocky path to take on, or, simply stay with what is known to validate a familiar point of view that will lead to a predictable, easily justifiable outcome (but not necessarily the best). In essence, curiosity is characteristic of true intelligence. the PFC’s decision can expand the boundaries of intelligence, or ringfence what is already there.
It’s an amazing thing, the intelligence trap and how we can often mistake this for curiosity. By this I mean that we see people interrogating bias in order to defend and thus become litigators of their own schema, instead of getting outside the box and asking oneself, “pethaps there another, more effective or efficient way”. I love this!
The PFC decides whether to invest energy exploring the unknown or conserve it by staying with what’s known. Curiosity is a resource allocation call.
Traditional approach to thinking about a problem using little or no curiosity. Outside the box is the potential for the opposite opportunity
