Lesson Six TBD: Novelty, Dopamine and the Itch of Not Knowing

At its core, curiosity is novelty-seeking behaviour.

We’re wired to notice the new—a pattern that doesn’t match expectations, a surprising result, an unusual behaviour, a strange data point. This isn’t a bug; it’s a survival feature.

When we move toward that novelty, something important happens: the brain releases dopamine. Dopamine is not just about pleasure. It’s about anticipation, motivation and learning. It says:

• “That was interesting.”

• “Do that again.”

• “Pay attention; something important might be here.”

Curiosity → anticipation → discovery → dopamine → more curiosity. You get a reinforcement loop for learning.

There’s also another force in play: cognitive dissonance. That’s the uncomfortable tension when reality doesn’t match our beliefs:

• “I thought this athlete was at their limit, but they just smashed that set.”

• “I was sure this strategy would work, but the numbers say otherwise.”

• “I believed this theory, but the data doesn’t line up.”

Cognitive dissonance is a psychological itch. We want to scratch it. We can:

• scratch it by denial (“The data is wrong, the test was flawed, the ref was biased”), or

• scratch it by curiosity (“Maybe my model is incomplete; what else is going on?”).

Same itch. Very different future. Very different consequences.

  1. dopamine acts as a reward…..consequently doing more of the same thing reinforces reward and ‘feeling good’ – a virtuous circle encouraging us to do the same thing repeatedly…..

  2. Dopamine is critical for motivation. Each time we learn something new we grow and dopamine is released and we are motivated to learn more and our performance goes up which motivates us to learn more – it is a reciprical relationship between learning, performance and motivation and it is fueled by dopamine. Learning something new is anticipation in action.

  3. Dopamine is less like a pleasure chemical and more like a teacher that grades your life choices in real time.

  4. Dopamine gives us feelings of pleasure and satisfaction. If it is released when we notice a new idea, behaviour or result it will provide an incentive to continue to seek out these new things. This will help in learning because it will make it easier for us to take the first step towards learning something new. More dopamine is likely to be released as the learning process continues, which will then provide additional rewards for our ongoing learning efforts.

  5. Dopamine is the fuel that feeds the learning loop. Without it, the loop breaks. Reward and activity on their own form a chain, but the link has to be dopamine. Otherwise, things remain static. And learning is a dynamic process. So, by definition, no dopamine equals no motion/no drive/no result. Things, simply, become flat.

  6. Love the sense of challenge in learning something new. Curiosity is like an itch needing to be scratched and the pursuit of a little dopamine spurs us on! How good? Lifelong learning via its science.
