ATLC #13 – More on Peel The Orange!

PEEL THE ORANGE (PTO) – BENEFITS

The operating rooms in a trauma centre would be useless without the trauma teams being skilled in PTO. Any major airport would be a daily disaster area if pilots and air traffic controllers were unskilled in PTO. No football team could survive a season without highly developed PTO skills.

In ordinary, everyday life there are probably few occasions where an individual needs to be a skilled PTOer and that is a good thing. However, where one gets into leadership roles in high performance scenarios, emergency or dangerous situations or where timing is critical, or in highly competitive business and other environments that PTO becomes a strategic tool that can give the skilled user and/or team that coveted survival advantage’.

In the last DFQ you were asked to list three benefits that are likely to come from the PTO leadership skill.

PEEL THE ORANGE (PTO) – DISADVANTAGES

Today, I want to discuss the possible disadvantages of “Peel the Orange”. There are, of course, pluses and minuses to everything and PTO is no exception. Often, the greater the upside in a situation the greater the potential downside.

So what are the risks, dangers and potential disadvantages of PTO?

DFQ #13:
List three possible disadvantages of PTO as follows:

1. For the trainee (you) …
2. For the trainer (Michael)…
3. For the class …

  1. 1. For the trainee (you) …That I peel it in the wrong way or in a less efficient way as it should be
    2. For the trainer (Michael)…that you don’t get what you expect of the students
    3. For the class …that we may influence each other in negative ways

  2. 1 Me, the Trainee. risks , dangers and potential disadvantages may be that particular demands put on me may be against my better judgement, or may feel bullied.
    2. The Trainer: May be able to take advantage of this situation, using the PTO for his/her own advantage.eg feeling of hierarchy.
    3. The class. May also feel the inauthenticity of the situation. Or may lose confidence of respect for the leader/trainer.

  3. 1. For the trainee (you): I’ll have less time to think about what I’m doing, becoming less aware of possible negative consequences of rapid acting. There’s a trap of “drinking water without having first to taste it”.
    2. For the trainer (Michael): smth, you would like to pass to the trainees could pass past their ears without their notice, reducing the ‘optimal point of training’
    3. For the class: the “leader nuclei” is more likely to thin down, may be even down to few members, making in-group learning less effective.

  4. 1. it can make the trainee a mindless, noncritical follower who stops thinking about thinking
    2. certain actions and skills might be successful in the past – but not anymore today. Due to little or no feedback he might go into the wrong direction
    3. it may stop creative processes within the class and therefore prevent progress and learning

  5. 1. For the trainee (you) in any situation in the learning process I as the learner must be commited if I do not then no magic can save me for better out come will be nothing achieved.
    2. For the trainer (Michael) To my Trainer if trust is not there nothing can beachieve because I will not makefurtherstudies to see through what am learning.
    3. For the class …the disadvantage there will be no excitement to discuss further what we learn and there will be no seriousnessto allno influence to acquire value.

  6. 1. Stop thinking
    2. Growing complacent.
    3. For the class no possible disadvantages – after all any experience is a good experience – be it in the form of
    a cautionary tale -;)) or a good lesson…

  7. To peel the orange out my range or skill would only lead to disaster.
For the trainer a failure could lead him to think he has not trained me.
For the class, we are all in the same boat but if I fail at the oars then the boat is only as good as its weakest link.

  8. 1. for the trainee you may over peel the orange at places out of your enthusiasm to do better, that must encourage you to on, and as you practice, you may one day peel an orange with a single dent or cut, that will make the orange not attractive to eat.

    2. For the trainer,( Michael) as you have practiced and peel many orange, thus having the skill to peel orange over the years without a cut in the orange gives you the confidence to direct the trainee to manger his or her enthusiasm, by practicing and repeating and rehearsal, to the point that you will be able to impact the peeling skill into the trainee, which will give you (Michael) that satisfaction of achievement.

    3. For the class, the satisfaction of the trainer makes the trainee know he or she is on the right path.

  9. 1. For the trainee measure of ability is too high for everyday life. training for that survival mode is vital for when? When will it happen?…
    2. For the trainer (Michael) consistent training to what advantage, the benchmark may keep moving…
    3. For the class the level of benchmark is maybe too high, are we all leaders? …
