ATLC #13 – More on Peel The Orange!

PEEL THE ORANGE (PTO) – BENEFITS

The operating rooms in a trauma centre would be useless without the trauma teams being skilled in PTO. Any major airport would be a daily disaster area if pilots and air traffic controllers were unskilled in PTO. No football team could survive a season without highly developed PTO skills.

In ordinary, everyday life there are probably few occasions where an individual needs to be a skilled PTOer and that is a good thing. However, where one gets into leadership roles in high performance scenarios, emergency or dangerous situations or where timing is critical, or in highly competitive business and other environments that PTO becomes a strategic tool that can give the skilled user and/or team that coveted survival advantage’.

In the last DFQ you were asked to list three benefits that are likely to come from the PTO leadership skill.

PEEL THE ORANGE (PTO) – DISADVANTAGES

Today, I want to discuss the possible disadvantages of “Peel the Orange”. There are, of course, pluses and minuses to everything and PTO is no exception. Often, the greater the upside in a situation the greater the potential downside.

So what are the risks, dangers and potential disadvantages of PTO?

DFQ #13:
List three possible disadvantages of PTO as follows:

1. For the trainee (you) …
2. For the trainer (Michael)…
3. For the class …

  1. 1. A disadvantage for me (the trainee) is that my skills may not be able to adapt to a changing circumstance
2.A disadvantage for you (the trainer) is that you may not be able to teach new approaches or may not be able to find a BVS
    3. A disadvantage for the class (the others) is that the whole group may perish

  2. 1. For the trainee (you) …not thinking for myself- just automatically following orders from ‘authority’- might mean it’s not the best choice for me.
    2. For the trainer (Michael)…the trainer is possibly at least partially responsible for other actions if they are following his/her orders.
    3. For the class …lack of individuality if everyone is doing the same thing (following the same order/ doing things 1 way only).

  3. 1.) A possible disadvantage of PTO for a trainee is that I might not know if my instructor is asking me a trick question.

2.) A possible disadvantage of PTO for the trainer is that he might get a less than satisfactory response from his trainee.

3.) A possible disadvantage of PTO for the class is that its members might become confused and turn to one another for guidance, while none exactly understand the task at hand.

  4. i feel a possible downside of pto as a trainee would be rushing in without fully comprehending the task at hand and making a mess of it , therefore lowering confidence in the future. for the trainer i feel one disadvantagewould be trainees not feeling they had the right to clarify the task at hand (asking questions )prior to commencing the task , therefore risking unwanted outcomes . for the class, witnessing varied interpretations of pto,s from others may make individuals not trust their own view of the task and get bogged down with questioning the task at hand.

  5. I may have no experience or clue how to approach the challenge, fail and become unmotivated.
You may have to help us unlearn processes and procedures that work but are not ideal for various reasons.
The class may mutany in the face of a lack of guidance and understanding of the purpose.

  6. 1. the trainee may feel at a loss at times if they feel that there PTO isn’t switched on all the time,
    2. the trainer would probably get exhuasted with their PTO was switched on all the time’
    3. not everyone is swithced on together all the time

  7. 1. for me as a trainee I see no disadvantages because when I decided to enter the pipeline I took full responsibility if it gets tough
    2. for you, Michael as the principal I see no disadvantages aswell because if I, as a trainee, misunderstand your concepts means for you learning how to improve next lesson
    3. for the class I see only learning so no disadvanges aswell
Sorry but today I see only the full glass. In the learning process I see only benefits even when it gets “tough”.

  8. 1. It could be dangerous and risk getting hurt if someone said jump off the bridge and I didn’t ask or question I would die
    2. There could be a better more effective way that the trainee has come up with that the trainer and team could benefit from. Like an automatic orange peeler?
    3. Everyone has a different attitude and way of learning and they could be disadvantaged or take twice as long to get to the solution

  9. One risk for the trainee is that an idea of doing things differently may and moves from an established pattern may bring resistance from others.
A risk for Micheal may be that trainees misinterpret the training.
A risk for the class may be a lack of consideration for members of the group, with destructive or negative feedback

  10. 1. For the trainee (you) … I will become desensitised if this approach is over-used, the mind goes numb and the tool loses its effectiveness (and in worst case backfires).

    2. For the trainer (Michael)… It is good to make certain points but not the best tool for all points. But, it is an easy tool to use so there is a risk of over-using. Also, if one limits PTO exercises to one’s own PTO repertoire this limits space of learning and thinking.

    3. For the class … We all have learning preferences and PTO will resonate with some people more than others. If not used selectively taking a perscriptive approach will have diminishing returns and eventually a negative influence.
