ATLC #04 – Leadership Thinking

My view is that leadership thinking can be based on a simple formula of three imperatives:

Escape + Search = Think

Escape + Search = Think

Escape + Search = Think

Click through and read about The 59 Second Course in Thinking and then think further about why these three imperatives were chosen. After that return here and do today’s DFQ.

DFQ #04:
Post your comment on how you think
ESCAPE + SEARCH = THINK might help
you to become a much better leader.

  1. The feeling of doubt that intuitively can pop up is there for a reason. There is nothing wrong with saying I would like to think about this – in fact there are very few times when you haven’t go this luxury in business or your personal life. Getting someone to else to think as well and then coming to consensus by itself is a BVS and often a BVS x 10.

Inclusion of others so they own the idea as well as you is the most powerful leadership technique you can use as it harnesses the skills and talents of all going forward or sideways or backwards as might be appropriate!

  2. This is probably one of the most important lessons I have learned. The challenge is to train my mind to ‘escape’. So often I am rooted in analysing of making logically arguments for my position. To be to escape from my current viewpoint is the most critical part of thinking. It is the fist step, the most important step, the real beginning of thinking. Escape is the most important part of thinking. My acronym for thinking is ESCAPE:
    E scape
    S earch
    C apture
    A nalyse
    P ick
    E xecute

  3. Escape + Search = Think: will help me to reach my “Escape Velocity” to move towards my BVS. It will help me to communicate with my team. They will have insights that will help us reach our BVS quicker.

  4. Defending mean you are rigid towards your view of situation while escape from a situation represent that you are agree that are some other options which can be Searched. This search is key of every creativity… followers are rigid and leaders are creative

  5. Switching from CVS to BVS is critical for progress. To make the switch, you need to have the discipline and courage to escape your CVS and search for a BVS. This process of escaping and searching in my opinion is effective thinking. It is this type of thinking rather than defending your CVS, that will lead to progress.

  6. My habit is to follow and to seek a leader, because I long ago assumed I wasn’t a leader for other people appeared to be far better leaders than I.

By learning to escape from my CVS and search for a BVS I can stimulate change through finding alternatives that can distract from past habits. Finding alternatives leads to new ideas.

By escape + search I am forced to think. Thinking can promote clarity by enabling you to eliminate possibilities that are of lesser use, possibilities that cloud the issue.

Leadership requires clear thought as clear thought when given impetuous can lead to clear action. Clear action is the essence of leadership. I already lead as I sometimes carry out clear actions. By recognizing why I already lead I find the secret of leadership. By understanding that clear action, predicated by clear thought and promoted by escape+search=think, is the essence of leadership, I know what I must do more of. I must work to first escape. To escape for me requires distraction. Distraction comes from seeking new environments to learn in, and new people to learn with. I can make an effort to lead these new people. This allows me to establish what leadership skills I am lacking in by recognizing & analysing successes and failures.

My conclusion: To become a better leader I must change my environment, seek leadership situations, and distract myself from past habits.

Escape+search=think forms a part of this.

  7. I think that the main leader’s feature is to set an example, to show to people what they could be and so inspire them for some outstanding achievements. Thinking in non-typical way the leader make people think in non-typical way and so make people be more effective and more happy.

  8. As a leader in a group environment, is it imperative to deal with multiple points of views of any given situation. If it is well understood, amongst a group, that there are multiple views of a situation, that we can all escape our own view and search for a new, better view of a situation providing 10x the benefits, then I’d imagine the group would become very productive and collaborative.

  9. Well I went back several years until I read Les’scomment that long term we’ll all be dead. I reevaluated my position to one of recognizing a Bvs over Cvs and creating Bvs’s.
