PEEL THE ORANGE (PTO) – BENEFITS

The operating rooms in a trauma centre would be useless without the trauma teams being skilled in PTO. Any major airport would be a daily disaster area if pilots and air traffic controllers were unskilled in PTO. No football team could survive a season without highly developed PTO skills.

In ordinary, everyday life there are probably few occasions where an individual needs to be a skilled PTOer and that is a good thing. However, where one gets into leadership roles in high performance scenarios, emergency or dangerous situations or where timing is critical, or in highly competitive business and other environments that PTO becomes a strategic tool that can give the skilled user and/or team that coveted survival advantage’.

In the last DFQ you were asked to list three benefits that are likely to come from the PTO leadership skill.

PEEL THE ORANGE (PTO) – DISADVANTAGES

Today, I want to discuss the possible disadvantages of “Peel the Orange”. There are, of course, pluses and minuses to everything and PTO is no exception. Often, the greater the upside in a situation the greater the potential downside.

So what are the risks, dangers and potential disadvantages of PTO?

DFQ #13:
List three possible disadvantages of PTO as follows:

1. For the trainee (you) …
2. For the trainer (Michael)…
3. For the class …

  1. A possible disadvantage for me is that I may lose my initiative.

A possible disadvantage for you is that you may not get feedback to change as circumstances change in the wider market place.

A possible disadvantage for the class is the loss of creative thought and initiative .

  2. three possible disadvantages of PTO as follows:
    1. For the trainee (you), without a clear understanding and thinking skills PTO can make me dependent and robot-like
    2. For the trainer (Michael), without objective motives, PTO can be used for manipulation
    3. For the class, PTO can be used for arbitrary control when people are not allowed to express opinions

  3. The disadvantages for me the (trainee) is that I may become bored, or resentful over doing a menial task or a task that I may not see the value in (it requires a certain type of person to push through and do the work).
The disadvantage tot he trainer is that if I do not perform as expected, certain action has to be taken, which may not positive
The disadvantage for the class is that they will have to rely on everyone to have the same level of competence and work ethic — if they do not, then something could be at risk for failure

  4. 1. For the trainee (you) always expect PTO kind of assignments , situations and avoid complex ,challenging and innovative projects
    2. For the trainer (Michael) as instructor the changes declared as a result of the course may get clouded by people focusing on PTO and may affect the credibility of course or the declaration
    3. For the class avoid situations where PTO may not work and potentially loose the benefit of cvs to bvs , out of the box thinking !

  5. 1. For the trainee (you) there is potential of developing a mindset that I have to either give PTO instruction or receive the PTO instruction. A lot of times the situation may not be moulded but require different , challenging complex thinking and action
    2. For the trainer (Michael) is assuming that all learning imparted can be converted into PTO ; the actual level of change and maturity in people getting trained is not what is expected. And this may affect the promise made regarding the course and Michael’s credibility?
    3. For the class all people going only into problem areas where there is PTO instruction possible either as leaders or part of team. The benefit of cvs to bvs and out of box thinking may get lost

  6. 1. For the trainee training in one method only can seriously decrease the numbers of options they may consider in an emergency and the best BVS may be missed.

    2. For the trainer after a few successful classes they will believe the optimum answer has been discovered and thinking will become ossified.

    3. For the class it is easy to fall into line and become parrots and never CVS to BVS their situations.

  7. 1. For the trainee … depending on my level of “maturity” (in this context), one disadvantage for a trainee could be the development of dependence on the trainer to begin issuing commands (oranges to be peeled)… “Do this task…” “Do that task…”. It can eventually kill initiative if the relationship and training don’t develop beyond this one-sided model.

    2. For the trainer (Michael)… as said above, if the relationship doesn’t develop beyond a one-sided “Do this…”, the likelihood of dependence on you for future action increases.

    3. For the class …because of the nature of “Peel the Orange”, the class members will either do it or not, and there is no relationship with each other. We have no idea who else is in our class.. and do we really care? Why would we?

  8. Overall, the importance or how a specific skill relates to the end goal of the training, could lead to students putting in less then optimal effort.

    1. For the trainee (you) … potential lack of understanding as to how a particular task is related to other task.

    2. For the trainer (Michael)… an important undertaking, taken in isolation, may seem meaningless to students. This could lead to future complications in the training.

    3. For the class … the lesson could be taken at face value, with the potential that the students will never question or expand on what is being taught.

  9. 1. + 2. + 3. As we learn from each other, there is the danger of wrong interpretation. We usually see what we are prepared to see.

  10. 1. For the trainee (me) If I do not put in self effort on what am taught then no outcome should be expected.
    2. For the trainer (Michael) To my Trainer to if student he is teaching did not put self effort he may be discourage at that moment but may feel great when others are doing well.
    3. For the class …a possible disadvantage is the Lack of co-operation that can inspire learning from others this may discourage others to put inn some efforts.
