ATLC #13 – More on Peel The Orange!

PEEL THE ORANGE (PTO) – BENEFITS

The operating rooms in a trauma centre would be useless without the trauma teams being skilled in PTO. Any major airport would be a daily disaster area if pilots and air traffic controllers were unskilled in PTO. No football team could survive a season without highly developed PTO skills.

In ordinary, everyday life there are probably few occasions where an individual needs to be a skilled PTOer and that is a good thing. However, where one gets into leadership roles in high performance scenarios, emergency or dangerous situations or where timing is critical, or in highly competitive business and other environments that PTO becomes a strategic tool that can give the skilled user and/or team that coveted survival advantage’.

In the last DFQ you were asked to list three benefits that are likely to come from the PTO leadership skill.

PEEL THE ORANGE (PTO) – DISADVANTAGES

Today, I want to discuss the possible disadvantages of “Peel the Orange”. There are, of course, pluses and minuses to everything and PTO is no exception. Often, the greater the upside in a situation the greater the potential downside.

So what are the risks, dangers and potential disadvantages of PTO?

DFQ #13:
List three possible disadvantages of PTO as follows:

1. For the trainee (you) …
2. For the trainer (Michael)…
3. For the class …

  1. 1. For the trainee, the disadvantage of PTO is that prescriptive procedues can reduce our own ability to think for ourselves.
    2. For the trainer, it reduces feedback on other perspectives that might lead to a BVS or better lessons/book.
    3. For the class, prescriptive rules also reduce interaction of new ideas.

  2. 1 – without acquiring the necessary skill , kill the orange , peel the wrong orange . Not knowing why you peel an orange
2- Not having the skill tom pass on , teaching beyond own competence
3- class learns all the wrong ways to set about peeling an orange.

  3. 1. For the trainee (you) that notion is important in the mesure that gives me the opportunity to make experements ad see the results. Then see the BVS …

    2. For the trainer (Michael) that notion is important in the mesure that it’s important to have a teacher in order to assimilate a new concept

    3. For the class that notion is important in the mesure that it makes some descipline

  4. 1. For the trainee the disadvantages would be that, I instead of independent thinker, I will be compelled to depend on others advise. My intuition and my comprehension of the situation will take the back seat.

    2. For the Trainer: he may not be alive to the situation and have to depend on third party feedback for issuing command. Thus his capacity to make the best decision will be based on understanding of the situation by some one else.

    3. For the class, it will mean they are mute spectators without any participation. This will end their drive to take up challenges and their desire to look at things from a collaborative perspective.

  5. DFQ #13:
The three possible disadvantages of PTO as follows: Note, it could either be positive or nagative for the trainee,t he trianer and the class for it all depends on thinking patterns(opinions and views) of the 3involved. the following are my possible assumptions.
    1. For the trainee (you)… oh! to peel an orange, i guess and know there are tool(s) that are required to do that because the orange cant just peel itself or follow commands. it could be a disadvantage if the tool(s) are not well handled. There could be loss of blood if there is a cut. Tears flowing down my eyes may be caused by its acid. The disatisfation and no commendation that will ensure if the orange is not well peeled. The anger that i might nurse if the orange is thrown away by the trainer after peeling. Also, the trainer might see me as been so foolish for not saying no or asking why or finding alternative ways of handling the orange. I will only peel the orange without knowing or asking questions if only am inthe millitary. But dont forget this Dr. Michael, I did sign the pipeline agreement so am not asking why.
    2. For the trainer (Michael)… Disatisfaction, discouragement & furiousness. He will assume he has lost his honour & authourity if the orange is not peeled. He may choose to discipline the class to regain his honour or stop the training and possible close the school of thinking. But pls dont.
    3. For the class… Not carrying out instructions is an indication that the group have failed and could possibilly bring the class to and end. It could also possible indicate that the instruction is not legal to be carried out.

  6. 1. For the trainee (you) loss of thinking/evaluation about instruction or orders.
    2. For the trainer (Michael) may loose objectivity
    3. For the class will get bore and disinterested.

  7. Three possible disadvantages of PTO could be:
    1. for the trainee, could it take away the possibility of a BVS?
    2. for the trainer, does it leave room for a BVS?
    3. for the class, could it create a standard that levels the playing field too much?

  8. 1. The trainee may not understand and will end up learning nothing.
    2. With no response or feedback from the trainee the trainer cannot fully engage the trainee, all ends up negetive.
    3. For the class, collectively they will learn nothing and may feel discouraged to continue.

  9. 1. For the trainee ( I may not recognise the right orange
    2. For the trainer the trainees may use the skills in negative destructive ways
    3. For the class it may seem too basic and simple

  10. DFQ #13:
List three possible disadvantages of PTO as follows:

    1. For the trainee (me) it could be disastrous to robotically carry out a flawed PTO that one has put one’s faith and trust in
    2. For any trainer promoting a flawed PTO s/he could lose credibility quickly
    3. For the class the collective reputation which had been built steadily over time, could, like any reputation be destroyed quickly with a flawed or misplaced PTO which is not robust, well-tasted & had not been carefully promoted
