PEEL THE ORANGE (PTO) – BENEFITS
The operating rooms in a trauma centre would be useless without the trauma teams being skilled in PTO. Any major airport would be a daily disaster area if pilots and air traffic controllers were unskilled in PTO. No football team could survive a season without highly developed PTO skills.
In ordinary, everyday life there are probably few occasions where an individual needs to be a skilled PTOer and that is a good thing. However, where one gets into leadership roles in high performance scenarios, emergency or dangerous situations or where timing is critical, or in highly competitive business and other environments that PTO becomes a strategic tool that can give the skilled user and/or team that coveted survival advantage’.
In the last DFQ you were asked to list three benefits that are likely to come from the PTO leadership skill.
PEEL THE ORANGE (PTO) – DISADVANTAGES
Today, I want to discuss the possible disadvantages of “Peel the Orange”. There are, of course, pluses and minuses to everything and PTO is no exception. Often, the greater the upside in a situation the greater the potential downside.
So what are the risks, dangers and potential disadvantages of PTO?
DFQ #13:
List three possible disadvantages of PTO as follows:1. For the trainee (you) …
2. For the trainer (Michael)…
3. For the class …

1. For the trainee (you) the main disadvantage is that if what he is being trained is wrong or misleading he won’t be trained correctly or in semething that’s that’s worth awhile.
2. For the trainer (Michael) the disadvantage is related to the power PTO can make him feel and due to this powerful almighty feeling he would end up abusing his position.
3. For the class end up loosing time and not receive a good training.
1. For the trainee, there is a chance that with the PTO motivation decisions may be made in haste.
2. For the trainer developing training content that caters for variations in individual skills is difficult.
3. For the class there is a possibility of spending time learning PTO skills which may not be directly applicable to trainees individual situations.
For the trainee the tast is mindless.
For the trainer it can be time comsuming
For the class it can be boring.
The disadvantage of PTO to the trainee might be unquestioned obedience to the instructions, without critical thinking.
The disadvantage of PTO to the trainer might be unbridled authority and abuse of power.
The disadvantage of PTO for the class might be manipulated members to their own detriment.
1. For me, the disadvantage is that PTO does not train me to understand and apply the learning. to different situations
2. For Michael, the disadvantage is that he would not get insights/learn from the trainees
3. For the class, the disaadvantage of PTO would be a lack of sharing thoughts and insights that are critical to learning
1. The trainee can become overconfident and might bring great harm to people or business if he made a fundamental mistakes. Just look at those dictators – Hitler, Stalin, Mao …they all have great skills in PTO…
2. The trainer might unintentionally train an autocratic leader who has no tolerance for different opinions- I am always right. Follow me or else…
3. There are different ways to get thing done. If all the future leaders believe in the PTO, we might get a very rigid business structures or a submissive society.
1. … lack of ‘thinking outside the square’, losing a sense of open-mindedness, restricting diversity…
2. … boredom, too much repetition, loss of motivation.
3. … “robotic” or “clone-like” responses, missed opportunities to present BVS’s!
Disadvantage for me – risk of rushing forward without thinking
Disadvantage for trainer – complacency
Disadvantage for the class – accepting that the problem is solved without searching for the best possible answer, without looking forward to new ideas and solutions.
1. For me a disadvantage might be a lack of thinking before acting in situations where it is needed.
2. For Michael a disadvantage might be that the training methods are restricted and become boring.
3. For the class a disadvantage might be a lack of variety and opportunity to find their own solutions.
A disadvantage for me is that it is difficult to gain insight and feedback on your performance if you ‘just do it’ and not ask a specialist
A disadvantage for the trainer is that colleagues can be disillusioned with the task if they are not given an opportunity to provide their thoughts and opinions
A disadvantage for the class is that they may see the same skill over and over again with very little (if any) change
