ATLC #04 – Leadership Thinking

My view is that leadership thinking can be based on a simple formula of three imperatives:

Escape + Search = Think

Escape + Search = Think

Escape + Search = Think

Click through and read about The 59 Second Course in Thinking and then think further about why these three imperatives were chosen. After that return here and do today’s DFQ.

DFQ #04:
Post your comment on how you think
ESCAPE + SEARCH = THINK might help
you to become a much better leader.

  1. I AM a much better leader when I know that there is always a BVS, including those from my team members. If we instill these principles into my students, employees or team members then we know that no matter what the problem or situation, there will always be ways to approach and improve on the CVS.

Escape and search are the tools that, with the principles of practice and repetition, will result in better thinking and results.

  2. Escaping ones fixed view or thinking means opportunity for finding more effective ways of moving through a problem or creating a better design or opening up effective communication. So that’s what effective and outstanding leaders are all about.

  3. We are usually so full of what we already know or think we know and our futures are usually filled with paradigms installed from past experience that there is no room for something new. As we gain experience, knowledge and skill, we can become conservative–overly so, and our creativity is sacrificed to protect ourselves and continue to survive. Our current success is achieved by relying on compensating strategies built from past “threats.” In leadership, we are asked to take on accomplishing what based on past experience is considered “impossible.” Being able to “escape” limiting perspectives, at least temporarily, can provide a clean slate or “blank page,” upon which we can create anew, not limited by the past, but rather, informed by it.

“Search” is what we do when we actively engage our minds and “Think.” We cannot “Think” if our minds and perspectives are already imprisoned by our current beliefs, paradigms, rackets, compensating strategies, self-talk and endless mind chatter.

What I can do with this is take time to clear my mind before engaging in mental effort.

  4. Having this thought in the back of your mind allows you to ‘not’ accept ‘traditional’ ideas as gospel and frees you up to form your own view.

  5. I imagine that training myself (and subordinates) to regularly look for better alternatives (bvs), will equip us with the ability and confidence to find more and better solutions to challenges which present themselves.

  6. Unless you escape from the old, how can you search for the new??Unless you know the new, how can you have a better perspective??Without a better perspective how can you progress??

  7. Leadership requires new ways of seeing things. Its simply a requirement.

Im not a military historian but the analogy is useful. In war times this would cost your life if you were unable to move to a better position.

In business its still survival. It requires positioning the business, seeing trends, making predictions, eloring options and opportunities.

Leadership requires new ways of thinking.

  8. It gives awareness of there always be better situation.
Stop — get outside the box — think — look around — think — look around — find new and better idea – — think — look around — think — look around — found even better idea.
Better view of situation will help encouraging teams.

  9. E + S = T means that there is always a BVS means you never need to settle for a less satisfactory outcome or method. That means there are always alternatives for inspiring a cohort of coworkers and colleagues. It means we are always inquiring into our processes and relationships.

  10. My first reactions, which include solutions to answers/projects, are normally first based on feelings, which could be influenced by my chosen diet for the day. ESCAPE + SEARCH = THINK opens more opportunities and possiblilities to an outcome and will always result in better educated desision making, which will obviously impact on the outcome possitively.

I am currently reviewing my life purpose and relooking my goals. I will be using ESCAPE + SEARCH = THINK to finalize the process and to include the widest range of possiblities to ensure a satisfactory project plan.
