ATLC #19 – Do a GBB!

Everything is a mixed bag in life!

Nothing can ever be ‘all good’ or ‘all bad’.

jumbled-emotions

Over the past 40 years of teaching higher order critical thinking skills we have seen that one of the most useful SOT thinking algorithms is the GBB.

When you do a GBB you deliberately judge the Good, the Bad and then you go even further to discern what could be Better.

G = GOOD. The good things about an idea why you like it.
B = BAD. The bad things about an idea why you don’t like it.
B = BETTER. What could be much better about an idea.

Everyone agrees that we should all be more broad-minded, more tolerant, more thoughtful, considerate, and more creative. Why don’t people THINK? How often have you heard that question?

It is easy to say to someone, “Why don’t you be more broad-minded?” But it is not so easy to actually do it. This is because it is impossible to focus attention on general attitudes like the ones mentioned above. They sound great as slogans and battle cries but have proved to be of little value as operating tools which can actually be practised and used.

However, a GBB is specific. It is possible to ask someone to “Do a GBB on this.” The thought-leader then takes pride in the skill of being able to deliberately see the Good, Bad and Better points in the situation.

DO A GBB!

Instead of just saying that you like an idea, or you don’t like it, you can use a GBB.

When you use a GBB, you give the good points, the bad points, and also the points which are neither good nor bad but are much better.

You can use a GBB as a way of managing ideas, suggestions, and proposals.

You can ask someone else to do a GBB, or you can be asked to do one yourself.

DFQ #19:
Do a GBB!

Tomorrow is the last lesson in this 30-day leadership pipeline so today is a chance to reflect on your journey so far. Do a GBB on this month’s training!

• List 3 GOOD things.
• List 3 BAD things.
• List 3 things that could be BETTER.

Post your GBB below:

  1. GOOD things:
training includes techniques that increase effectiveness and efficiency skills and skills for goal oriented thinking and behavior

    BAD things:
the training misses techniques fo soft/people skills
training material such as examples and references isn’t very extensive

    things that could be BETTER:
include soft skills techniques and elaborate more on the material
spread the training over 2 instead of 1 month

  2. Three good things: I learned some tools to use (The Pipeline, PTO, GBB) that I can immediately put to use. I also got a chance to look into the leadership process from a new angle. This has helped me to orient around concepts that I can give team members and create an effective environment for getting results. Third, I have a better appreciation for the SOT brain software (cvs2bvs, PRR, etc). I can see their benefits not only for myself, but for those on my team.

Three Bad things: On at least one of the DFQ’s, I didn’t follow the directions. I also would like to have seen a little more detail on certain concepts. I can’t think of much else that is bad…maybe more detailed response from other participants.

Three things that could be better: comment rating, threaded conversation, more detail or exercises (stuff that we can do on our own that isn’t linked to a DFQ).

  3. Three good things: Persistent daily progressive trainings. Lessons that draw on extensive life experience of what works. Materials that are intelligent, well-organized, and detailed.

Three bad things: Too many examples drawn from military training. Too many examples drawn from business. Not enough examples from, say, government or non-profit sector or arts or manual trades. (Not everyone taking this training is interested in building sales, expanding a business, or even making money, Michael!)

Three things that could be better: I could have spent more time thinking about each DFQ and provided more thoughtful answers. There could be more opportunity for interaction between participants. There could perhaps have been more direct links to the writings and research of other thinkers in the field of thinking.

  4. GOOD Things.
finding out about my persistence that I thought lost
acquiring new efficient tools to get further
I sticked to my plan and I am succeeding

    BAD things.
I did not write every day, too much to do on the side.
    missing interaction about the lessons
I would have like to learn more about “decoding” situations

    BETTER
    continuity has to flow better
    more time between the lessons
open it to other kinds of leadership (situational…)

Overall, Truly EXCELLENT!. Michael! Thank You for this Wonderful Learning Experience.

    2. no proper feedback about the writeups.
    3. the lessons are should be for a fortnight or alternate days. usually not able to find time to writeup daily.

  8. Good Provided some good points to ponder
    Motivated me to act
Easy to access lesson and work in your own time and pace
    Bad Lack of interaction

    3. How about Situational Leadership, and the abilities to READ Situations
    List 3 things that could be BETTER;
    1. Leader and Followers interaction
    2. Overcoming Weaknesses
    3. Having a Grand Synthesis
