ATLC #19 – Do a GBB!

Everything is a mixed bag in life!

Nothing can ever be ‘all good’ or ‘all bad’.

jumbled-emotions

Over the past 40 years of teaching higher order critical thinking skills we have seen that one of the most useful SOT thinking algorithms is the GBB.

When you do a GBB you deliberately judge the Good, the Bad and then you go even further to discern what could be Better.

G = GOOD. The good things about an idea why you like it.
B = BAD. The bad things about an idea why you don’t like it.
B = BETTER. What could be much better about an idea.

Everyone agrees that we should all be more broad-minded, more tolerant, more thoughtful, considerate, and more creative. Why don’t people THINK? How often have you heard that question?

It is easy to say to someone, “Why don’t you be more broad-minded?” But it is not so easy to actually do it. This is because it is impossible to focus attention on general attitudes like the ones mentioned above. They sound great as slogans and battle cries but have proved to be of little value as operating tools which can actually be practised and used.

However, a GBB is specific. It is possible to ask someone to “Do a GBB on this.” The thought-leader then takes pride in the skill of being able to deliberately see the Good, Bad and Better points in the situation.

DO A GBB!

Instead of just saying that you like an idea, or you don’t like it, you can use a GBB.

When you use a GBB, you give the good points, the bad points, and also the points which are neither good nor bad but are much better.

You can use a GBB as a way of managing ideas, suggestions, and proposals.

You can ask someone else to do a GBB, or you can be asked to do one yourself.

DFQ #19:

  1. 3 GOOD Things:

    1. Several Different Excellent Techniques = PRR = Practice, Rehearsal, Repetition; PTO; GBB; CVS2BVS; Think For Oneself.

    2. DFQ’s to Actually Understand, Apply and Review One’s Learning.

    3. Brevity of Information/Learning Material Filled with Solid, Practical and Possible Applications in one’s Personal Life and Professional Life.

    3 BAD Things:

    1. There were several times when the Answer(s) to the DFQ’s SUBMIT did NOT go through and had to reload the Page and SUBMIT Again … cumbersome, time waster, and at times, frustrating.

    2. Strange, while doing these Lessons, I had Computer Problems … delaying my Response Times …

    3. Some DFQ’s required Personal Input across a WWW network which is NOT very positive or recommended.

    3 BETTER Things:

    1. Typical Generic Answers/Some Feedback.

    2. Ease to Retrieve Previous Responses Instead of having to Go Back and Go Through Different E-mails to Arrive at Specific Reviews/Responses.

    3. Intervals of 3 Days for the Next Lessons.

Overall, Truly EXCELLENT!. CONGRATULATIONS, Michael! Thank You for a Wonderful Learning Experience.

  2. The good things that have happen over the 30 day period include: The joy I get from learning something new. The constant reinforcement in thinking skills and strategies. The opportunity to reflect, respond and renew ideas. The anticipation of waiting for the next lesson. The thinking required to respond. Pipeline, PTO and GBB are all good things. Getting involved has been a consistently good thing.
Some bad things for me include my computer playing up, not saying my writing and repeating too much work.. Not responding to questions asap. I recognised that the 111 word count was essential but elected to respond to the question without the nominated word count as a PTO within a PTO.
Things that could be better for me include: More feedback dealing with important issues such as the PTO-How has SOT used the concept? More documented reading/thinking on important issues from the SOT minds.

  3. Three Good Things- Pipeline, Orange, and GBB
    Bad Things –
    1. The guilty feeling of being late answering questions!
    2. I Sometimes had computer trouble posting the answers…
    3. I felt a bit miffed when you revealed that the word count for 111 words was the most important thing…
    Better
Would be nice to be able to access the previous questions with a link rather than having to go back to a previous email and click through.
Some feedback would be nice, but it couldn’t be generic!
maybe we could rate other posts, there are some great answers buried back there!

  4. Good
some very simple yet thought provoking approaches to direct reflection which I am sure make them very well differentiated accross abilities and backgrounds – everyone can get something from it.

    Bad
some content requested was too personal for me to want to share over the wab
no central page to work from to allow people to work through at their own pace – I knwo that this is a spaced repetition activity, but it would still be good to not be limited by finding the right email to access the relevant materials

    Better
as indicated – an index page to help accomodate varying working paces, would also allow you to see how we were progressing through the program
at least one example for each activity

  5. Good.
    1. The series was very interesting and demanding of thinking.
    2. It was never supposed to be a discussion group. It was a successful Coaching Clinic. Much as a Top Golf Swing Coach might help, without some well meaning friends helping over your shoulder.
    3. It’s agreed I think, that it’s not what you know, but what you Do with what you know. Well the PTO commands and even this GBB assignment is a Do job. An opportunity to Do, with the course so far.

    Bad..
I’m sorry I can’t find anything to say here. As a tutor over many years I realise you, Coach, have a pathway to progress along to complete each stage. It’s your plan and I found nothing to complain about.

    Better..
Inventing or designing anything original is difficult. Once it’s in the open anyone can suggest improvement. Size, colour, content etc., But in thinking about our Objective, which is more or less “Thinking about Objectives”, I’m satisfied that so far so good. In fact real good.

  6. GOOD
    1- Knowledge gained
2- Simple and easy to understand
    3- Enough space between lessons

    Bad
    1) Can’t ask questions
    2) No interaction
    3) Lose of focus

    Better things:

    1) There should be forum for questions and answers bothering our minds
    2) Attention should also be given to our weakness
3 )Members should be able to interact in other to network

  7. Good I learned about discipline – the goal i had set for myself
Good- I got to reflect a lot
Good – Learn more from other people’s responses

Bad – i did this over the Christmas season when access to internet when on holiday was not great
Bad- I did not rest over the holidays as i always had to reflect on work during my holiday
Bad – Could not ask questions

Better – i think i need to redo the course now that i have full internet access and i believe doing the exercises daily is better than sometimes having to do 2 or 3 a day
Better – I could have interacted with the other team members by asking questions directly to them based on some of their responses
Better -Can appropriate the lessons i learned about peeoling the orange more in my personal relationships as all my questions are being perceived as a lack of trust

  8. hi ,

    Good
    1) Brief and to the point
    2) Good use of time
    3) Great leaning tool

    Bad
    1) Can’t ask questions
    2) No interaction
    3) Lose of focus

    Better
    1) Provide examples on the subjects
    2) Improve on ease to enter comments
    3) Expand a little on key concepts.

  9. Good things:

    1. I now have insight into my strenght
    2. Learnt how to take command from my boss
    3. I am now a good trainer

    Bad things:

    1. The course calender was not properly followed as it was meant to be from Dec. 1 – Dec 31
    2. It did not give room for questions and answers
    3. It lacks evaluation

    Better things:

There should be forum for questions and answers bothering our minds
Attention should also be given to our weakness
Members should be able to interact in other to network

  10. Good; 1.Committment to training.
    2.Active participation in learning process.
3.Openess to improvement of learning process.
    Bad: 1.Lack of progress evaluation.
Better:1.Periodic evaluations by volunteers who have completed Leadership or Train-the-Trainer programs.
2.Pyramidial evaluations so as not to overwork principal teacher.
3.Potential teamwork situations(complex DFQs)that require participation for “final” leadership lessons.
