Everything is a mixed bag in life!
Nothing can ever be ‘all good’ or ‘all bad’.

Over the past 40 years of teaching higher order critical thinking skills we have seen that one of the most useful SOT thinking algorithms is the GBB.
When you do a GBB you deliberately judge the Good, the Bad and then you go even further to discern what could be Better.
G = GOOD. The good things about an idea why you like it.
B = BAD. The bad things about an idea why you don’t like it.
B = BETTER. What could be much better about an idea.
Everyone agrees that we should all be more broad-minded, more tolerant, more thoughtful, considerate, and more creative. Why don’t people THINK? How often have you heard that question?
It is easy to say to someone, “Why don’t you be more broad-minded?” But it is not so easy to actually do it. This is because it is impossible to focus attention on general attitudes like the ones mentioned above. They sound great as slogans and battle cries but have proved to be of little value as operating tools which can actually be practised and used.
However, a GBB is specific. It is possible to ask someone to “Do a GBB on this.” The thought-leader then takes pride in the skill of being able to deliberately see the Good, Bad and Better points in the situation.
DO A GBB!

Instead of just saying that you like an idea, or you don’t like it, you can use a GBB.
When you use a GBB, you give the good points, the bad points, and also the points which are neither good nor bad but are much better.
You can use a GBB as a way of managing ideas, suggestions, and proposals.
You can ask someone else to do a GBB, or you can be asked to do one yourself.
DFQ #19:
Do a GBB!Tomorrow is the last lesson in this 30-day leadership pipeline so today is a chance to reflect on your journey so far. Do a GBB on this month’s training!
• List 3 GOOD things.
• List 3 BAD things.
• List 3 things that could be BETTER.Post your GBB below:

I have gained an assessment of my strengths and weaknesses and have learned to leverage my strengths. I have learned the power of “peel the orange” and realize the value in doing what you need to do. and that a GBB is a much more thorough way of evaluating ideas. It can help take you to a better view of the situation.
One bad thing is the scheduling of the course. My weekends are electronics free so no computer. I wanted to spend ample time on each lesson. I will therefore review each lesson. Another thing is that there is no feedback on our responses. It would be very time consuming to do so but maybe a follow up on the main flow of the responses would be helpful..
I would conclude that a forum where students and mentors could interact would be better. More apps too.
Good things
1 daily emails keep me on target
2 easy to relate the prompts and questions to my work
3 great to read others’ comments and points of view
Bad things
1 no feedback from teacher
2 no interactions with other students
3 no direct reference to text: The X10 Memeplex
Things that could be better
1 options for real time “interactions”
2 material specified at each “lesson”
3 an easy way to figure out how others are applying the learnings
– List 3 GOOD things. The feedback questions made me think outside my normal thinking. Learning new ways to think. Reading other students feedback.
– List 3 BAD things. Email lesson scheduling, e.g. one late Friday and one on Saturday mean I have 2 to action on Monday. Not able to ask Michael a question about a particular lesson. It ends to soon.
– List 3 things that could be BETTER. Maybe feedback on some of the feedback, If it was possible to be a bit more a two way street like an open discussion. Would be nice to have a follow on course.
3 GOOD things on this leadership pipeline:
1. It’s a good thing to be actively thinking with School of Thinking ideas again.
2. It’s good to have reasons to listen for ideas and to organize ideas into useful plans.
3. It’s good to renew my desire to be a leader.
3 BAD things:
1. Do I procrastinate or am I giving the pipeline time to develop each day?
2. Do I want to see my comments listed with other on-liners for comparison or is it ego?
3. Feedback from Michael would be a GOOD thing.
3 BETTER things:
1. Could it be better if I could share personally more than just on-line comments?
2. Could it be better if I were actually in a work setting where I could practice what I am learning (rather than retired)?
3. Could it be better if I were in a social setting where I could practice leadership (just concluded term as president of an executive board)?
Good – refreshed my mind , reinforced good thinking habits ,introduced new ideas to work with
Bad – didn’t like personal story bit , 30 days seems too short , seems to have peaked too soon
Better – more applications for the thinking tools, more advanced course to follow , a continuous and developing spiral of learning
3 Good things.
1. PTO skill was new to me and helped me alot.
2. I learnt to focus on my strength and find ways to improve and build on my strength instead of focusing on my weaknesses.
3. I enjoyed reading feedbacks from my classmates. Yo thanks alot to you all.
3 bad things
1. I was not able to answer some of my DQF`s on time due to constant power blackouts here at the island.
2. I wish to comment on my classmate’s feedback but I cant.
3. Someone need to tell me whether I am on track or not with my feedbacks.
3 things that could be better
1. Open up for those who wish to pursue further in school of thinking.
2. I wish I could meet my tutor and classmates in person.
3. Award the best student
I guess this is one of the best online leadership training I have gone through. Thanks alot.
– List 3 GOOD things.
1. Challenging, I’ve enjoyed the content of the DFQ’s.
2. Openness, it’s really important to think and comment on the topics of the DFQ’s.
3. Great Value, for me this training represents great value as it has been no cost to me.
– List 3 BAD things.
1. It would be good to talk as a group, I understand the logistical challenge this would represent, but I’d argue the value.
2. Why did I wait until this stage of my life to do this?
3. More accountability and feedback.
– List 3 things that could be BETTER.
1. Make it more widely available, teach it in school.
2. Have a mentor to talk to.
3. More interactive, an app, or other media resources.
Three GOOD things about my this 30 day leadership pipeline and my journey on it are
1.The email in box lessons are simple to manage with clear subject lines. It helped me stay committeed
2. I’ve been exposed to to some insights about myself
3. I’ve learned some leadership skills, not having had exposure prior.
Three BAD thing about this 30 day leadership pipeline and my journey on it are
1. I couldn’t keep up with the delivery. Life got in the way
2. Sometimes the acronyms would confuse me ( I’ve pasted a list on the wall)
3. It’s too short and not deep enough
Three things that could be BETTER about this 30 day leadership pipeline and my journey on it are
1. I’d love to be able to give thumbs up to other comments when I resonated with them.
2. More depth to the information provided would be welcome. A better approach is to chase that information up for myself!
3. Sometimes the instructions were not clear, although that may be on purpose? For instance was today’s GBB about my journey or about the course itself? A better approach is to just PTO in every which way if I wasn’t sure and cover all possibilities!
Good things:
1. Has enabled me to develop freedom to think – That is to say the ability to now think new thoughts and ideas for each situation faced by stepping away from the challenge and assessing each from multiple viewpoints to arrive at a BVS rather than regurgitating the same old responses time after time.
2. Provided a framework to deliver dedicated time for cognitive thinking.
3. Provided inspiration to improve all aspects of my life and reach the BVS’s I am now able to formulate.
Bad things:
1. That I didn’t become aware of the SOT and this specific course 20 years ago.
2. No feedback to DFQ responses provided throughout the course.
3. Was difficult to dedicate quality time to the DFQ’s during the Christmas and New Year family break.
Things that could be better:
1.The ability to interact with the tutor (thought leader) to follow up/seek guidance on ones own thought processes and conclusions to the DFQ’s.
2. More real life examples/case studies of outcomes of previous candidates progress both during and post the thought leadership course.
3. Course to be more widely publicised and available through schools and Universities.
– List 3 GOOD things:
essential knowledge (it raises awareness)
flexible time of studying
non-fee paying (I don’t mean to say that one shouldn’t get money for his/her job; any job is to be awarded; but I think that it is a generous gift for many people to be able to study not paying ). Thus, many people are grateful for this.
– List 3 BAD things:
challenging to put into practice
I wish I had learned about new thinking concept provided by Dr. de Bono and Dr. Hewitt-Gleeson earlier (10-15 years ago).
the knowledge of the English language (I mean , such courses are accessible only to those who speak English). It has just occurred to me…
– List 3 things that could be BETTER:
introduction in the schools, universities
more detailed explanation and more examples
a kind of feedback (general, not after each lesson)
THANK YOU IMMENSELY FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY!!!
