ATLC #19 – Do a GBB!

Everything is a mixed bag in life!

Nothing can ever be ‘all good’ or ‘all bad’.

jumbled-emotions

Over the past 40 years of teaching higher order critical thinking skills we have seen that one of the most useful SOT thinking algorithms is the GBB.

When you do a GBB you deliberately judge the Good, the Bad and then you go even further to discern what could be Better.

G = GOOD. The good things about an idea why you like it.
B = BAD. The bad things about an idea why you don’t like it.
B = BETTER. What could be much better about an idea.

Everyone agrees that we should all be more broad-minded, more tolerant, more thoughtful, considerate, and more creative. Why don’t people THINK? How often have you heard that question?

It is easy to say to someone, “Why don’t you be more broad-minded?” But it is not so easy to actually do it. This is because it is impossible to focus attention on general attitudes like the ones mentioned above. They sound great as slogans and battle cries but have proved to be of little value as operating tools which can actually be practised and used.

However, a GBB is specific. It is possible to ask someone to “Do a GBB on this.” The thought-leader then takes pride in the skill of being able to deliberately see the Good, Bad and Better points in the situation.

DO A GBB!

Instead of just saying that you like an idea, or you don’t like it, you can use a GBB.

When you use a GBB, you give the good points, the bad points, and also the points which are neither good nor bad but are much better.

You can use a GBB as a way of managing ideas, suggestions, and proposals.

You can ask someone else to do a GBB, or you can be asked to do one yourself.

  1. good:
    1. clear
    2. concise,
    3. organized
    bad:
    1. not enough details
    2. not enough examples
    3. no feedback
    better:
    1. add a live Q&A
    2. give feedback on selected comments
    3. highlight exceptional comments

  2. Good things
1 learning about the pipeline idea
    2 learning about PTO
3 the 5 day a week approach is regular enough but allows short breaks to contemplate for a day, where needed, before completing a task
    Bad things
1 not enough content to read each lesson
2 did not run long enough, course was too short
3 no single source of content to refer back to later
    Better things
    1 a longer course
2 more content to read in each lesson
3 a single document with all the content to keep at the end

  3. GOOD THINGS
    1. Great opportunity to learn about leadership and thinking
    2. Understood the importance of PTO concept.
    3. Learnt about focussing on my strengths and building on them.

    BAD THINGS
    1. No feedback on our comment on the DFQs
    2. No opportunity to discuss ur view points with other students.
    3. No live examples of where these concepts/theory have been used

    THINGS THAT COULD BE BETTER
    1. There should an option to do this course faster if the student has the time and can handle it
    2. A link should be available where the student can see their responses to the earlier DFQs in the course
    3. There could be more videos explaining more concepts

  4. GOOD
    -Learning from others
    -daily
-different way of looking at things
    BAD
    -no dialoque with others
    – no feedback
    – never sure if you doing the task in a good way
    BETTER
    -interaction
    -feedback

  5. Good:
    1. Forced me to think about ground realities facing me, squarely.
    2. Compelled me to refocus on opportunities & Threats.
    3. Provided me with road map for future ahead.

    Bad:
    1. Could have been more activity oriented.
    2. More applications through examples would have made a deeper impact.
    3. Case study based approach would have made application easy.

    Better:
    1. Case based scenarios can be used to instill greater clarity & impact.
    2. Further reading suggestions for creating more linking to the ideas.
    3. If we could actually present our situations with corresponding actions
taken and put it up for feed back for course correction.

  6. Good –
I’ve learnt a lot about myself.
I’ve learnt some tools for learning even more in the future.
I’ve gained some confidence to share my learnings.

    Bad –
    I’ve resisted learning – practicing.
I haven’t been applying the learnings consistently (lack of discipline).
I’ve often under-estimated the content for days before understanding.

    Better –
Stretch targets within each lesson – making them richer with “go further” content (like yesterday’s link).
More stories that make the journey personal & also ensure that we invest ourselves.
Better acronyms. I really liked SDNT, but I have to pronounce it “stunt”, & then it loses some of its meaning.

I particularly like this lesson, first for recognising the influence of de Bono’s PMI idea, then for getting the initials GBB – take it from Jax GiBB! (Good, interesting, bad, better)

  7. Good Things:
    1. Understand the value of commitment to a task.
    2. Understanding the importance of following instructions.
    3. Understanding the benefit of practice and repetition.

    Bad Things:
    1. Not enough examples from other participants of their experiences in applying the PTO and the Pipeline.
    2. Not enough canvassing of the background for the PTO and Pipeline principles.
    3. Not enough theory.

    Things That Could be Better:
    1. The lessons could contain more discussion of the principles.
    2. More practical examples with suggested solutions.
    3. Regular feedback.

  8. Good 1: lessons arrive by email, prompting engagement.

Good 2: interesting, useful tools that are practical

Good 3: other thinkers comments are available to stimulate thought.

Bad 1: lessons arrive by email, buried in other stuff, sometimes becoming just another chore.

Bad 2: difficulty in linking lessons to work.

Bad 3: working in isolation — no discussion, feedback.

Better 1: make other thinkers comments available AFTER a DFQ has been answered.

Better 2: form a group — at least one other person — at work or online to interact and discuss the lessons with.

Better 3: feedback after DFQ responses. There may be no right answers or best answers but there might be interesting points that we could all learn from.

  9. Good: 1. informative 2. interesting 3.short
Bad: 1 time constraints 2. no “ted” talks 3. sometimes very general
Better 1.related “Ted” talks 2. PTO needs to be further defined 3. Assistance in time management

  10. GOOD Things:
    -Know more of my strengths
-Started well on the Pipeline, complete my Gym pipeline as well
    -Increased my knowledge

    BAD Things;
-Missed some days of the Pipeline
    -Kept allowing distractions
    -Easily lost motivation at times

    BETTER:
-My knowledge to survive in a “Darwinian” sense has taken a quantum leap
    -My edurance has increased
-I am better at debating and changing my mind
