ATLC #05 – More on Leadership Thinking

6principles

In addition to Escape + Search = Think leadership thinking can also incorporate 6 principles which we emphasise. I have encouraged trainers and leaders to understand and master the Six CAP Principles.

Now click through and read about these six CAP principles and try to explore in your own mind the value of each of these ideas, then come back and do today’s DFQ.

DFQ #05:

Choose one of the six CAP principles, and say why you think a better understanding of that principle will help you to become a much better leader.

NOTE: After you post your comment today you’ve completed 5 DFQs and the first week of the 4 weeks of the 30-day Pipeline. That’s good. It means you are already establishing new cognitive patterns. Keep it up!

You may have noticed that I sent you 1 lesson a day for 3 days then missed a day. After this lesson, I’ll miss another day and then send you lesson #6 which starts the second week. That means you get 5 DFQs every 7 days.

  1. Hello Guys & Girls,

Having children of a school going age it is interesting to note how different teachers use these principles in differing ways with different degrees of success, and what good guinea pigs they make for this stuff. (Children that is not teachers)

I choose CAP 2; knowledge into skill, and use the old saying ‘practice makes perfect’ as a reflection of what I need to do personally as well as to encourage others, amongst whom the afore mentioned offspring, to do in order to become better leaders, people, etc,

  2. 2. Knowledge into Skill. If I simply know something it will not seem as important to me or come as naturally to me as it would if I had applied that knowledge and turned it into a skill. It is easy to know something and then forget it later down the track, but a skill, no matter how rusty, will come back when you have to do it it again. The old saying is that you never forget how to ride a bike.

  3. 1. Knowledeg into Teaching – This is also reminder not to try and teach/explain something to someone else unless you fully understand and are competetnt in the skill yourself. Leaders can often get found out when they are trying to mask a lack of knowledge in one area. This can lead to peers discrediting or questioning other areas which they may be very knowledegable.

  4. 1. Knowledge Into Skill
It is one thing to know what it is you are supposed to do, however knowing how to do it is another thing which requires practical application of the knowledge as well as daily practice to embed it. With is insight it is important to focus on the key skills as we tend to be bombarded with knowledge and it is virtually impossible to covert all these into skills.

  5. 3. Measurement

This is a key element as effective measurement will drive the quality and content of the training. In other words moving away from tick box processes of yes you’ve completed a course to a value add of now you have completed a course and have a level of skill which can be relied upon. The saying “what gets measured gets done” is very true so knowing how to better establish meaningful metrics would be a key to future success.

  6. 5. Effective Follow-up:
The monitoring of feedback and measuring results were an important part of CAP. Checking to see if what happened was what the trainee really wanted. This became a continuous part of the process.

Leaders Do The Best They Can.
Developing the leadership thinking as a skill is the never ending process.
    (PRR)

  7. Learning by teaching:

Through learning I will remove the self awareness aspect of leading and training. Then I will be free to deliver the content smoothly and with the passion that would otherwise be suppressed due to having only moderate confidence in what I am saying.

  8. How to deliver CPR or Feedback. we all know that feedback is the food of champions its being able to adapt to a team members needs and overcome communication barriers so that they understand and not process it in a different way eg get lazy and fall of the band wagon or take it to harshly and leave finding the right balance to keep every individual on task would be priceless

  9. 1. Learning by teaching
Being able to do thie ensures that you are able to articulate yourself in a way that is easily understandable by others this requires clear, concise, accurate and engaging communication. The more engaging you can be the more of a charismatic leader you can become.
