Your DFQ #13:  WHO?

Who can help?

You don’t need to mention names but list three people who can help today?  eg my neighbour, my agent, my partner

  1. When i think of people helping me it usually is closely linked to the current headspace i am in:
Family navigation – Wife and subject experts
    Business – My Mentor
    Personal – Mentor / Coach

  2. My partner
    My colleagues (present and past)
My mothers’ group (who are not defined as primarily mothers!)

  3. I want to discover a BVS for so-called ‘big data’. My CVS is that data is incomplete, inaccurate and unconnected. I need to find datasets for a subject and then analyze the data for insights. Who can help? I’m selecting genealogy, or family history, for this exercise. Other subjects may be more relevant, or interesting, but genealogy clearly relies on data. So who can help me with this application?

I intend to contact a South African military historian and talk to local genealogists to see if I can discover a BVS.

  4. My favourite person to ask is a real expert on the topic at hand. The challenge sometimes is to find one.
A natural person to ask is one’s boss – the best way to manipulate a powerful person is to ask for their advice.
And it is always valuable to ask my direct reports – they are the real experts on their areas, and the asking is a way of validating my respect for their knowledge.

  5. My wife is great at showing me a different viewpoint on what I’m doing. Same with my daughter as she’s seeing the world in a completely new way from mine. There are many people in my network I often connect with to bounce an idea. Sometimes it’s because I know they’ve experienced something similar and sometimes it’s because they haven’t. I also find that asking people who are financially successful, or an Academic, allows me to view my cvs in a completely new way.

The bottom line is asking and for that, you need to prepare the question(s) ahead of talking with someone else:

    Is your question correct?
    Can it be answered?
Does it really cover what the problem is? etc.

  6. How do you / see / see things, situation etc? is a very useful question. Reality does not exist, each creates his own through what he chooses to perceive that is influenced by his ordinary way of thinking. When I have a team to accompany, it is useful for everyone to give their point of view. As far as I am concerned, I like to have the point of view of one of my nieces who is working in a totally different professional sector and her way of looking at things in my field is a great source of reflection. My granddaughters with whom I had the chance to spend time (without their parents;)) have very refreshing views on family and friendship. A chance conversation with an unknown person can be very rewarding. This is not all, a new way of looking at things, a reframing in short, can take place after a reading (a few lines, or even just a few words that cause awareness on an issue in progress (I refuse to use the term “problem” at any moment.) But also, to give oneself to the discipline of seeking to see things differently than how one is naturally “worn” there.

  7. In my work in conflicting prevention, I can ask somebody who is deemed to be a “spoiler” of the process that I am helping and to see his CVS and profit from it. I can also ask an artist about his or her view of the situation. I am always talking to politicians and to the elite perhaps it is time to change dialogue partners. I want also to speak to members of the LGBTQ, they are not usually consulted.

  8. My colleagues at work who will always have a different approach than what I had thought of (for better or for worse). This at least makes me think and consider their approach.
My wife who always offers me a different perspective to what I think and simply adds a lot colour to my world.
My dogs who help me de-stress after a long day at work.
My friends who come from similar backgrounds but help me think of implementations they have tried.
