  1. This is my second time of completing this course, the first being about 5 years ago. In that time I have continued to work diligently and frequently in improving my metacognition aligned with the principles of the SOT. I can honestly say that this time around I have been able to see this improvement in being able to compare my thinking then to my thinking now. For instance the specific x10 thinking I was able to apply to my answer to DFQ #12 this time around would not have been possible when i first started out on this journey 5 years ago.

    ‘I am currently looking to merge two frameworks into one – One related to operational technical controls and one related to Risk and Governance controls. This is required to enable translation of actual security threats being targeted at an organisation from a technical standpoint into the correct level of business risk to the business based on the frequency and targeted area of the available attack surface of the threat (to determine probability) aligned with the impact to the business based on the availability of the systems that would be affected by the actualisation of the threat.

    For some time I have been working to realign the different layers of the GRC framework (mainly subjective) starting at the highest to the lowest into a technical mathematically based measurement tool (absolute) to enable qualified and more accurate upstream Risk reporting based upon actual not subjective technical risk exposure within an organisation, without much success. Asking the question ‘Why not reverse the sequence or rotate it’ has enabled me to identify an easier way of mapping the technical viewpoint to the governance viewpoint accurately at only the lowest level of the framework greatly simplifying a working solution to the requirement.’

  2. The clearest output for me from completing the suite of SOT exercises has been an increased consciousness of my thought patterns in response to questions/problems/challenges. Now I specifically ask myself and/or my group, when we need to improve or change something, is there an opportunity to make a really big change. Can we do it in one amazing step? Is there a radical idea that can completely overhaul our thinking? Is there something “out of left field” that can change the whole paradigm? I think major jumps and revolutionary changes occurred in the past, but they were infrequent and ad-hoc and subject to “luck”. Now I look for them explicitly.
