Why are the better thinkers getting the better jobs?

It’s because better thinkers are creating value.

They are getting the job done without creating a fuss. They are getting on with others. They are co-operating and solving problems.

They are mindful of creating opportunities. They use their brainpower to give their employer a much better return on payroll.

Better thinkers are more job-friendly. Employers prefer better thinkers.

On any given day in any given business there are value fountains and value drains.

That day the value fountains created value for the shareholders.

The value drains depleted shareholder value on that day.

The job of the CEO is to multiply the number of value fountains by ten. That’s why CEOs offer better jobs to better thinkers.

NOTE: When you SMS or text, you can put the magnifying glass emoji at the beginning of your message to show that you are deliberately being forensic. This deliberateness is important and is called 'being mindful' or metacognition.

https://i0.wp.com/images.all-free-download.com/images/graphiclarge/magnifying_glass_vector_287113.jpg?resize=77%2C77 Be forensic

Is it true? Fact check. Search more information. Be attentive to facts and figures. Be aware of true news or fake news? When you text or SMS this emoji you just give neutral information. You are not polarised or biased. You are a sort of wikipedia. Just get the facts out. Be alert to all the information you can on the current situation.

https://i2.wp.com/d2trtkcohkrm90.cloudfront.net/images/emoji/apple/ios-10/256/top-hat.png?resize=65%2C65 Be judgmental

Be Negative. Think inside the box. Use Black Hat thinking. Be conscious of the fact that you are being deliberately judgmental. Say why you think it’s wrong. Why it won’t work. Why it’s not true. Why you do not believe it or do not agree with it. Note that if you’re simply being emotional then that comes under another emoji.

Image result for emoji comedy tragedy masks Be emotional

This is the emotional emoji. Feelings. The full range from comedy to tragedy. Emotions are important. It is better when they are informing your thinking not just controlling your thinking. Moods are part of life. Are you in an up mood or a down mood? Just say what you feel about the situation without bothering to explain. You hate it. You love it. Say, “I’m being emotional”. Feelings and personal values are part of every situation. Be emotional.

https://i2.wp.com/d2trtkcohkrm90.cloudfront.net/images/emoji/apple/ios-10/256/money-bag.png?resize=76%2C76Be generous

American thinker, Mark Twain, said, “Kindness is a language the blind can see and the deaf can hear”. Of course, just because the generous emoji is a bag of cash doesn’t mean it has to be cash. It’s symbolic. It can be time. An attentive ten minute visit with a friend. It can be energy. A thoughtful good deed or a chosen kind word. Share the good things, pass them on. Offer kindness first. Maybe even twice. But, no need to be a sucker.

https://i2.wp.com/cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0185/5092/products/objects-0057.png?resize=57%2C87&ssl=1 Be innovative

This emoji is for creative ideas. The ideas do not have to be sensible or logical. You can use provocations. You can try things out. You can use x10 thinking to escape from the box! The purpose is to be awake to new ideas. Your career, business, investment and commercial success is directly related to the quality of your decisions. Every day you make decisions that will either increase your wealth or decrease your wealth. Every day you will do things that either create value or drain value. Your choice.

Image result for emojis  Be cool

This is strategic and laid back. This is detached and objective. Here you are organising your thinking about the situation. Cool is for thinking about your thinking and we call this being mindful or metacognition. Strategy is for giving instructions to yourself and others. Cool is neutral. You can be deliberately exploring the subject through the use of the other thinking emojis: Be forensic. Be emotional. Be judgmental etc. The possibilities, options, strategies, tactics, pathways, trajectories, networks and proximities that are available for you to think about can accelerate your own personal productivity and results. Don’t be stupid. Be strategic.

Image result for whatsapp emoji umbrella  Be wise

Use the crown emoji for The Wisdom of King Solomon or the Wisdom of Queen Elizabeth or any wise person you can find. Where can we find wisdom? Who has the most knowledge? Who has the most experience?

WISDOM = KNOWLEDGE + EXPERIENCE.

At least 50+ years. Who has seen it all before? Who was there in history? First-hand knowledge? Skin in the game? Consequences? Survival? Avoid the mindless, inattentive and careless ones.

Be happy

Modern song lyrics like Pharrell Williams “Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth” and Bobby McFerrins’ “Don’t worry Be Happy” are not new ways of thinking. Deliberately choosing a positive mindset goes back at least 2500 years as far as the Epicureans of Ancient Greece. But humans haven’t changed much since then so it’s still very good advice. Don’t worry.

Be healthy

R&R. Rest & Recuperation. Recharge the batteries. Take-it-easy. Your brain is the biggest engine in your body. It consumes more fuel and generates more energy. Give it a rest and a time to recover. Give it a holiday from your screens and your gadgets. Your physical, mental and emotional health cannot be separated from the pattern of choices you make. Every hour of every day you are designing your future. If your designs are tired or weak your future cannot be strong. Be mindful.

Image result for whatsapp emoji umbrella rain  Be careful

In today’s world there are BIG issues of privacy and security. Your own privacy. Your own security is at constant risk in the crackling chaos of the internet–the 24/7/365 whirling, howling, cacophonous wilderness of the greedy grasping global marketplace with its siren songs, ferocious fads and hoaxes, toxic wastes and vicious moods, its callous explosions, its viral plagues and epidemics and cruel and sudden extinctions. Your own survival and growth, in a Darwinian sense, cannot be separated from the pattern of how you make your decisions over time. If you don’t do your own better thinking others will do it for you. These other people, institutions or authorities may not do it well at all or even in your best interests.

First school on the smartphone!

In 1995 School of Thinking was the first school on the internet. Ten years before in 1984 we had already invented and published the universal brain software (cvsx10=bvs) with global distribution.

In 1996 we were the first internet school to have real audio. In 1996 we won the Top 5% of the Web Award.

In 1997 we were the first online school to give global MOOCs pro bono.

In 2000 we published The x10 Memeplex: Multiply Your Business By Ten. Jack Welch of GE and Larry Page of Google are the acknowledged world leaders in the application of x10 Thinking.

By 2005 thousands of academic, government and social businesses worldwide had already started using x10 Thinking.

In 2007 we were the first school on the smartphone and then the first publisher of a collection of smartphonebooks.

In 2019 we will be the first smartphone school to award master degrees in lateral thinking to fully qualified students. What will you be doing?

30 years on: from 16 to 25 million Australian brainusers.

NEWS: Today Australia’s population reaches 25 million!

Thirty years ago the PM corrected me on this important matter of fact!  Watch this short amusing clip …

PM Bob Hawke at SOT launch in Canberra, 1988, with SOT Principal Dr Michael Hewitt-Gleeson

On 30 May 1988 in Canberra the School of Thinking was officially launched in Australia by Dr Michael Hewitt-Gleeson in the presence of the Prime Minister of Australia at the time and Rhodes scholar, The Honourable Robert J Hawke AC, GCL who commended Dr Hewitt-Gleeson for this initiative and agreeing,

No longer content to be just the lucky country, Australia must now become the clever country!

Prime Minister Hawke was then presented with a School of Thinking certificate by Dr Hewitt-Gleeson proclaiming him to be “Australia’s Number One Clever Brainuser” and to symbolise the vast potential of the power of Australia’s 16 million brains.

Cognitive Biases: Your Lying Mind

Most books and articles about cognitive bias contain a brief passage, typically toward the end, similar to this one in Thinking, Fast and Slow: “The question that is most often asked about cognitive illusions is whether they can be overcome. The message … is not encouraging.”Kahneman and others draw an analogy based on an understanding of the Müller-Lyer illusion, two parallel lines with arrows at each end. One line’s arrows point in; the other line’s arrows point out. Because of the direction of the arrows, the latter line appears shorter than the former, but in fact the two lines are the same length. Here’s the key: Even after we have measured the lines and found them to be equal, and have had the neurological basis of the illusion explained to us, we still perceive one line to be shorter than the other.

At least with the optical illusion, our slow-thinking, analytic mind—what Kahneman calls System 2—will recognize a Müller-Lyer situation and convince itself not to trust the fast-twitch System 1’s perception. But that’s not so easy in the real world, when we’re dealing with people and situations rather than lines.

“Unfortunately, this sensible procedure is least likely to be applied when it is needed most,” Kahneman writes. “We would all like to have a warning bell that rings loudly whenever we are about to make a serious error, but no such bell is available.”

SOT Pedagogy: ‘The Scheyville Experience’ and Student Performance Objectives

Differentiating from other academic, knowledge-driven approaches, the School of Thinking has always been focused on SKILLS since its inception in 1979. We are driven not by SLOs (Student Learning Objectives) but rather by SPOs (Student Performance Objectives). The SPO pedagogy was imported from the military.

Because the School of Thinking training strategy is strongly based on it, I’ve been asked to tell a little more about the Scheyville Experience.

The war movie that had the biggest impact on my life was a little known movie called National Service Officer, a military infomercial about a rigorous and elite finishing school for young army officers at an almost secret place called, Scheyville OTU (Officer Training Unit).

1967 201a Entrance

During the Viet Nam War, on being drafted for National Service, they showed it to us in boot camp and, as a result, we could volunteer to apply for leadership training at the Scheyville Battalion of Officer Cadets.

After a rigourous selection procedure a few of us were selected from each recruit training battalion around the country and I was one of the 23 selected from Puckapunyal in Victoria in July, 1967. I was a member of the class of 3/67 and 4/67. During less than a decade before it was closed down at the end of the Vietnam war, almost 1,800 men graduated from OTU Scheyville.

The Officer Training Unit (OTU) Scheyville (pronounced like ‘sky-ville’) was a place in Western Sydney of which most Australians have never heard. However the Scheyville Battalion’s leaders have gone on to be extraordinarily successful in their chosen fields; the famed DFAT class of ’69 pales in comparison. It has been argued that they are perhaps one of the most successful cohorts Australia has ever produced. In Australian military history this is now known as the Scheyville Experience.

https://i1.wp.com/www.otu.asn.au/wp-content/uploads/img0011.jpg?resize=656%2C655&ssl=1

Now you can watch that movie the Army made to recruit for the Scheyville Experience here

Most schools couldn’t claim as many successful sons as Scheyville. To be sure, schools like Perth Modern can claim a Prime Minister, departmental secretaries, ministers and a Governor-General – but it did not produce them within the space of seven years.

Scheyville can claim a Deputy Prime Minister (Tim Fischer), a state Premier (Jeff Kennett), parliamentarians, the leader of the famous airline strike, a Vice-Chancellor, scientists, a coterie of Brigadiers, successful broadcasters, journalists and advertising men and a bevy of prominent businessmen like Marcus Blackmore – all from but seven short years.

Scheyville also produced some very gallant young men.

The founding Commandant and ‘Father of Scheyville’ was Brigadier Ian Geddes. His training motto which he commended to the Officer Cadets was … I Can and I Will!

THE ‘FATHER OF SCHEYVILLE’

The founder of the Scheyville Battalion of Officer Cadets was Brigadier Ian Geddes who was born in Tamworth, New South Wales on 4 February 1921 and he suffered a stroke and died on Saturday, 21 July 2007.
