Mary Meeker 2018 Internet Trends

Mary Meeker releases her highly anticipated internet trends report for 2018, covering everything from smartphone sales to time spent facing screens.

Here are some headlines:

  • 2017 was the first year in which smartphone shipments didn’t grow. Because more of the world already has smartphones, growth is harder to come by.
  • The same for internet growth, which rose only 7 percent in 2017, down from 12 percent the year before. With more than half the world now online, less people are offline.
  • Screentime, however, is still increasing. U.S. adults spent 5.9 hours per day facing their screens in 2017, up from 5.6 hours the year before.
  • 3.3 of those hours were spent on mobile screens, which is driving the overall growth in digital media consumption.
  • The global average selling price of smartphones is continuing to fall. Lower costs help drive smartphone adoption in less-developed markets.
