The SOT Method: Return on Stimuli (ROS)

At the School of Thinking (SOT) we teach thinking as a skill, 100% online.

The SOT intervention method for changing behaviour is stimulus and response.

However, there are three BIG gateway problems to solve. The first gateway is attention. The second is engagement. The third is repetition.

  • Attention. Nothing at all happens in the brain unless and until there is a capture of attention. There are only 168 hours in a week.
  • Engagement. Attention is fleeting and needs to be sustained. This is the problem of engagement.
  • Repetition. While there is the potential of neuroplasticity in the brain the reinforcement or replacement of patterns relies on the power of repetition.

Great in theory. In practise, easier said than done.

Furthermore, for young brains, this has to be achieved in the contemporary online environment–the crackling chaos of the internet–the 24/7/365 whirling, howling, cacophonous wilderness of the greedy grasping global marketplace with its siren songs, ferocious fads, toxic wastes and vicious moods, its callous explosions, its viral plagues and epidemics and cruel and sudden extinctions.

RETURN ON STIMULI: Through extensive R&D, School of Thinking (SOT) has developed an online pedagogy that solves these problems and produces exceptional positive results (return on stimuli). SOT can do this with any random group and at any random time 24/7/365–and even work online in that distracting and noisy environment. Our content area is metacognition which is the development of higher order thinking skills.

RESULTS: A range of return on stimuli from 3:1 to 6:1 (response:stimulus). For example, in the most recent SOT conversation period of 95,801 interactions, 13,427 stimuli produced 82,374 responses, arranged across the three levels:

  • Level 1 – Attention:  49,021
  • Level 2 – Engagement: 22,555
  • Level 3 – Repetition: 10,798.

Currently, there is no other online pedagogy that can achieve these measurable ROS results. In addition, there is the significant cognitive surplus created enterprise-wide from x10hinking. This new surplus can be directed at any project or theme chosen or endorsed by the CEO.

The School of Thinking motto in Latin is: NEMO NASCITUR SAPIENS ARTIFEX. In English this motto is: ‘No-one is ever born a skilled thinker!’
