POPSCI: The 100 Best Innovations of 2009

POPSCI STORY:

The standards by which we judge the year’s greatest innovations are simple. The objects don’t necessarily need to be beautiful (although some, like the all-glass TKTS building in Times Square, certainly are). They don’t have to be eco-friendly (although the packaging made of biodegradable fungus certainly is). They don’t even have to be difficult to build (with all due respect to the telescope designed to find Earth-like planets).

bown-opener-485-2They just have to push past what we thought was possible just twelve months ago.

And the following 100 innovations have all blown us away, beginning with the headliner, our product of the year: something so simple yet so smart, with the ability to improve countless lives.

Please enjoy the full list here on our special Best of What’s New site, arranged by category, each with its own Grand Award Winner and packed with additional videos and photos.

WORLD THINKING: what is world thinking?

World thinking is the thinking of ALL the people in the world.

There are many different and parallel worlds.

There is the cosmos. The natural universal world.

There is the world on Earth. The 1.8 million species of the animal world. The world of plants. There is the human world. There is the world of your family, your school, your gang, your sports club, your partner, your enemy, your nation and the street where you live.

And most poignant and immediate of all, there is the cognos, the world of thinking inside your head!

One of the world’s most authentic examples of world thinking is the Gallup World Poll.

The late Professor George Gallup founded the Gallup Poll at Princeton, New Jersey, which became the world’s first system to objectively and scientifically measure public and customer opinion. He was also the inventor of market research and the ultimate saviour of the customer.

Would you torture me? I would torture you!

In one of the most dramatic psychology experiments ever conducted, Professor Stanley Milgram proved that I would torture you and that you would torture me if we were directed to do so by a recognised authority.

This was the famous experiment called the Milgram Experiment.

Hard to believe? Well they’ve done it again …

BBC News:
Decades after a notorious experiment, scientists have found test subjects are still willing to inflict pain on others – if told to by an authority figure. US researchers repeated the famous “Milgram test”, with volunteers told to deliver electrical shocks to another volunteer – played by an actor.

Even after faked screams of pain, 70% were prepared to increase the voltage, the American Psychology study found. Both may help explain why apparently ordinary people can commit atrocities.

The 59 Second Course in Thinking

E+S=T

THE 59 SECOND COURSE IN THINKING

In any situation, thinking involves two basic processes:

escaping from your current view of the situation, and

searching for a much better view of the situation.

ESCAPE + SEARCH = THINK

The Current View of the Situation (cvs)
can never be equal to
the Better View of the Situation (bvs)

(cvs≠bvs)

Escape from your cvs
and search for a bvs!

(cvs2bvs)

You can search for a bvs that is
ten times better than your cvs.

(cvs X10 = bvs)

Why “Thinking Instructors”?
Michael originated the idea of training thinking instructors when he co-founded School of Thinking with Edward de Bono in 1979 in New York.

Edward was very keen on the ‘train-the-trainer’ idea and wrote to Michael from Cambridge (where he was a Professor of Investigative Medicine) saying, “I think your idea is brilliant! Training instructors has much more motivation” and so, after much discussion and planning, they decided to combine Michael’s CAP Train-the-trainer 6 principles with Edward’s CoRT Thinking syllabus and they started the School of Thinking on November 17, 1979 in New York.

The first intake for Thinking Instructors (TISOT) graduated in March 1980 in New York. One of the original graduates was Eric Bienstock who became the first Chief Instructor SOT and is now Vice Principal of the school.

Who Can Be A Thinking Instructor? There are no special qualifications for being a Thinking Instructor other than a genuine interest in thinking and in teaching thinking. Many Thinking Instructors are school teachers, business people, sports professionals, parents and neighbours. There are four different types of Thinking Instructors:

Self: Practising the skills in one’s own life for personal advancement, cognitive skill and well-being.

Family: Teaching the skills to one’s family and friends and as a forum for family discussions to avoid conflict and deal with family crises.

Business: Sharing the skills with colleagues, workmates, associates and clients to solve business problems and explore potential commercial opportunities. Also to find ways to cut costs and increase revenues. To raise morale and communications through employee participation and involvement in decision-making.

School: Practising the skills in classrooms to accelerate learning and discussion skills and even, where possible, to teach THINKING as a separate curriculum subject.

– The above quote is from The Learn-To-Think Coursebook and Instructor’s Manual co-authored by Edward de Bono and Michael Hewitt-Gleeson (Capra Press USA, 1982).

MyPicture8.jpg

In 1982, Michael and Edward co-authored this book which became a cover story on all global editions of Readers Digest (at that time, the world’s highest-circulation magazine with 68 million readers) and SOT launched the biggest program in the world for teaching teachers-of-thinking.

The idea behind the School of Thinking’s ‘Thinking Instructor’ concept is threefold:

1. Thinking is a skill. It can be taught and learned like other skills.
2. The skills are designed to be simple, robust and effective. They are easy to teach and easy to learn.
3. Anyone who is interested can teach these skills to anyone who is interested in learning them.

As mentioned above, there are no special qualifications needed to learn SOT thinking skills and there are no special qualifications needed to pass on the skills as a Thinking Instructor. Having said that, SOT is also willing to list on our site those members who have completed the qualifying series of SOT training courses listed below and to issue them with the Thinking Instructor SOT (TISOT) Certificate.

Certified Thinking Instructor – TISOT
SOT members who have completed all 80 lessons in the following two SOT training programs are qualified to apply for the TISOT Certificate:
1.  BCT: Beyond Critical Thinking
2. L-MHG: Advanced Leadership Training (which also includes the new module Think Darwin! How to raise your darwinian intelligence).

If you can find a way to multiply your thinking skills by ten and also multiply your selling skills by ten, then you will also find that you have–as a result–multiplied your leadership skills by ten. This can be done through training and coaching.

I look forward to personally working with you in this next class of Thinking Instructors and, on the successful completion of your TISOT training, to present you with your TISOT Certificate.

Best wishes,

Michael

Information wants to be free

Very often people ask why the SOT is free. Why are there no fees? Some people are even sceptical that it is free and wait for the “money-scheme” to ambush them.

There is nothing wrong with charging fees for services and SOT is actually funded by the fees we do charge to corporations for consulting. But, on the web, SOT is free and has been since it first started.

In 1995, the School of Thinking became the first virtual school on the internet as one of the world’s first 10,000 websites. Today the internet has more than 600 million websites.

In those first days the ethos of the internet was “Information wants to be free!” and SOT became the world’s first school for teaching thinking to anyone, anywhere and at anytime. As Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the WWW puts it, “The spirit of the internet was not one of patents and royalties but of academic openness”.

STEWART BRAND spreads the “information wants to be free” meme at the first Hackers’ Conference in 1984 …

“On the one hand information wants to be expensive, because it’s so valuable. The right information in the right place just changes your life. On the other hand, information wants to be free, because the cost of getting it out is getting lower and lower all the time. So you have these two fighting against each other.”
