In this recent DEAKIN University Talk Dr Michael Hewitt-Gleeson draws attention to “the greatest problem on Earth”.

It’s a wicked problem that’s a hundred times bigger than the problem of global warming and many orders of magnitude greater than the problems of health, water or population. It’s also the greatest opportunity on earth!

If you have 2 minutes you can eavesdrop in on the greatest problem on Earth

  1. Thinking. Over-thinking. Under-thinking. Emotional thinking. Rational thinking. We need them all. Not just for humanity but as individuals. Learning to think is the only path that changes us.

  2. Surely human thinking is the greatest problem on earth, and that is why it is in demand. For, the QUALITY of H-thinking determines the results of what is to come or what is to happen… So we need to exercise some more strategic thinking – CVS2BVS- in other to tackle and solve the world´s problems. By using the CVS2BVS thinking the problem of egos is simply obliterated, which lead us then to better solutions.

  3. I agree wholeheartedly (wholebrainedly?) I wish I could see more of that presentation, is that available publicly or via any SOT offering? Having gone through SOT many times over the last decade (3 times–refresher/reinforcement), what would you suggest one do to get the SOT concepts thoroughly embedded in one’s necktop PC? Obviously PRR comes to mind. I can answer my own question it seems, and it comes down to the ‘doing’.

If Human Thinking (or lack thereof) is the greatest problem on Earth, what is the root cause? There are obviously many contributing causes, but in my opinion, I think you’ve already identified a major player decades ago: PTV. I think the PTV can account for much of the world’s thinking problems, strife, division, polarity, etc.

I suppose all we can do is keep inoculating ourselves and loved ones and live by example.

  4. The problems I am most concerned about are: –

    1) risk of war escalating to deployment of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons, that risk being exacerbated by rampant and aggressive militarism, imperialism and foreign policy shaped by interests of investors to prevent any infringement on investor rights at great cost to humanity, communities, the environment and life on earth

    2) risk of catastrophic climate change resulting in conflict over food, water and other resources and forcing mass migrations and diasporas and

    3) escalating inequality and disillusionment, risks lifting the veil on the illusions of democracy, rule of law, and equality of opportunities to reveal the way that concentrated wealth distorts the political and legal system so that the interests of the wealthy elites are uniquely catered to by near identical political parties while the majority of the populations are disenfranchised.

TO THE EXTENT THAT HUMAN THINKING IS A MAJOR CONTRIBUTOR TO THOSE PROBLEMS AND IMPROVEMENTS IN HUMAN THINKING COULD CONTRIBUTE TO SOLUTIONS I CAN VERY MUCH ENTERTAIN YOUR PROPOSITION THAT HUMAN THINKING MAY BE THE GREATEST PROBLEM ON EARTH.

I do think there is a need to distinguish between the META PROBLEMS of human problem solving and the very serious problems to which that problem solving can be applied. There also may be other META processes contributing to problem solving, that may overlap or be distinct from the problem of human thinking. These could include identity, spirituality, awareness, motivation, rapport, empathy, communication, cooperation, governance, operacy and effectiveness.

On further thought, YES, I agree that human THINKING is a VERY GOOD CANDIDATE for what may be the MOST IMPORTANT META-META-PROCESS affecting most or all of the other meta-processes bearing on the serious and urgent problems facing Humaity on Planet Earth.
