On any given day in any given business there are value fountains and value drains. That day the value fountains created value for the shareholders. The value drains depleted shareholder value on that day. The job of the CEO is to multiply the number of value fountains by ten.

I could visualise a Value Fountain as a constant stream of ideas being pushed out of employees heads and experimentation towards a fountain outlet that a shareholder deems necessary, A Value Drain may be a stream of criticisms and complaints with stagnation. The important part is then to reward the creation of ideas and experimentation by making sure resources allow that to happen (i.e. time and funding for teams to ideate and experiment).
